The change in season comes with more than cozy sweaters and pumpkin spices lattes: autumn marks the beginning of the dreaded cold & flu season. A single bug can knock you out for anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks. Stay ahead of the curve by following the tips below. And when you do catch something, we have tips for that too.
1 . Wash & Sanitize Your Hands
The best way to avoid getting sick is to stop bacteria and viruses before they have a chance to enter your body. Wash your hands consistently through out the day. Follow the “happy birthday” rule and sing the happy birthday song to yourself twice while washing your hands. This ensures you meet the 20 second mark and you’re good to go.
For the times when you aren’t able to wash your hands, carry a pocket hand sanitizer. We like this one from Dr. Bronner’s. It’s made with all natural ingredients and contains organic glycerin to moisturize and protect your hands from drying out.
2 . Boost Your Immune System
When something gets into your body your immune system is your first line of defence. There are many herbs and supplements that you can use to make sure your immune system is functioning top notch. Among the many nutrients that have boasted immune boosting capacities, there’s one that stand out.
There is overwhelming evidence that shows the ability of vitamin C to reduce the risk, severity, and duration of infectious diseases. While many animals can synthesize their own vitamin C, humans rely on obtaining it from diet alone. Many experts recommend supplementing 1,000mg vitamin C daily in addition to a diet high in fruits and vegetables for optimal immune function.
3 . Strengthen with Herbs
Another way to enhance your immunity is by deeply nourishing the systems that back up the immune response. This can be accomplished by looking at the body in terms of traditional Chinese medicine and tonifying with specific herbs.
Deep Immune is an herbal formula that strengthens the body’s deep immune system. It does this by nourishing the bone marrow in which our immune cells are born. Supplementing this formula daily can help to strengthen weakened immune systems. If you get sick easily, this may be the formula for you.
4 . Deal with that Tickle
The first sign of a cold coming on is that oh-too-familiar tickle in the back of your throat. When you feel the tickle, grab that vitamin C and some echinacea throat spray.
Echinacea increases the number of white blood cells (immune system cells) that your body produces. This throat spray is a quick, soothing and convenient way to tackle your sore throat and stop things before they get worse.
5 . Call for Back-Up
So, you’re sick. A nasty bug has made it’s way into your body and settled in. Your immune system is in full combat mode and you need to send back ups.
Oregano oil is a natural born killer. It has antibacterial, antiviral, and even anti-fungal properties. You have to be smart with this supplement, though. Oregano oil kills on contact and has no problem killing your good gut bacteria along the way. Think of oregano oil as nature’s antibiotic. When you take oregano oil you must take a good strong probiotic as well, at least 4 hours away from one another. A good bug fighting combo is Botanica’s extra strength organic oregano oil and Renew Life’s critical care probiotic.
Be smart this cold & flu season. Make sure your body is armed and ready to fight so you don’t have to spend a few days, or a few weeks, under the weather. Life is short and ain’t nobody got time for that!
