Trends come and go, but these healthy habits are truly worth your time. A small amount of time put in ends up paying off huge dividends for your health, mood, and energy levels. Starting the day with some simple self-care sets you up for a great day ahead. Try adding one of these morning habits in at a time and once it’s second nature, try adding another. Morning are about to become your favourite part of the day!
1 . Start your day with intention
Instead of waking up to instagram, facebook and emails, establish an intention practice. Have a notebook next to your bed and sit with your thoughts for a moment upon waking. Reflect on what you are grateful for and what your ideal day ahead will look like. Use your first waking moments to tune into yourself and set the stage for an amazing day.
Begin your practice by writing down three things that you are grateful for, three things you would like to accomplish that day, and establish a positive affirmation. Having a positive affirmation to follow you through the day increases your resilience and reminds you of your own personal power. This simple practice sets you up for a beautiful, productive day.
2 . Clean your tongue
An ancient Ayurvedic practice, tongue scraping removes bad bacteria and enhances the connection between the tongue and the body. By enhancing taste receptors, the proper connection between what you’re eating and your body’s response is restored. This allows for proper functioning of satiation signals and allows you to be satisfied with less salt and sugar.
The tongue is also the body’s first line of defence. Bad bacteria build up on the tongue and produce toxins that can be absorbed into the body. By regularly scraping your tongue you remove the bad bacteria and reduce your overall toxic load. This can lead to enhanced energy and vitality.
Tongue scrapping is an easy practise that goes right along with brushing your teeth in the morning. Using a stainless steal scrapper, gently scrape the tongue from back to front 7-14 times. Rinse the scraper between strokes if there is a lot of accumulation. Do this prior to eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth in the morning. As a daily practice, you will be reaping the benefits of this ancient practice in no time.
3 . Drink warm lemon water
Beginning your day with a glass of warm water with lemon kick starts your system. The warm water flushes the digestive system and rehydrates the body after several hours without water. It also helps to flush the liver and enhance bile production, setting you up for enhanced digestion. The addition of lemon adds vitamin C to the mix which is great for a healthy immune system. Because of it’s ability to enhance digestion, warm lemon water also contributes to clear, glowing skin.
If you use lemon water to replace your morning coffee, the health benefits are even greater. Coffee is dehydrating, quickens digestion so that foods aren’t properly digested, and leaves the digestive system in an awful state. Do your body some good and make the transition away from coffee.
To add this to your routine, squeeze half a lemon into a large glass of warm water first thing in the morning. Adding peppermint or a few slices of ginger is nice as well, but not necessary. Sip through a reusable straw to prevent damage to tooth enamel that can be caused by the acidic lemon. You will be surprised how energized you feel when you start the day with a happy digestive system. You’re setting the stage for proper digestion which will give you a more sustained energy through out the day.
4 . Move your body
In our bodies, the lymphatic system cleans up toxic cellular waste and takes care of it’s removal. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a built in pump to help move it around the body. Instead, the lymph relies on skeletal muscle contraction to pump and squeeze the lymphatic fluid for removal.
A congested lymph, or a lymph with little movement, causes cells to sit in their own toxic waste, leading to inflammation and disease. Staying well hydrated along with regular exercise allows a smooth flowing lymph and protects your cells from toxicity.
A simple, 10-minute yoga morning routine will help to get your lymphatic system moving and remove accumulated debris and toxins from the night before. Not only will it get your muscles contracting to help with lymph drainage, yoga also encourages deep breathing which helps to pump the lymphatic system along. When you start your morning right the rest of the day follows suit. Never underestimate the power of self-care. Start your mornings with the intention of a great day ahead and you will undoubtedly be happy and healthy, no matter what gets thrown your way.
